DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES

The Department of Chemical Sciences is among the first batch of Departments to take off in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, in 2018. The Department is located at the ground floor in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences Building, close to the University’s Second Gate.  The Department offers two programs, awarding Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. The Department has a standard and up-to-date Laboratory for undergraduate programmes.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE B.Sc. BIOCHEMISTRY PROGRAMME

The Biochemistry programme is structured to inculcate the fundamentals and concepts in Biochemistry and their applications in Biotechnology, genetic engineering, medicine, food, nutrition, agriculture, pharmaceutics/pharmacology and the environment, especially the biochemistry of local significant microorganisms, plants and animals.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE B.Sc. CHEMISTRY PROGRAMME

The programme creates and disseminates knowledge by constituting a scholarly community focused on research and education in the area of Chemistry and related fields of study. Our programmes equip students to be competitive, to succeed in their profession, and to contribute to society. Chemistry is the index of industrial development. The giant strides made by man in the understanding and exploitation of nature, synthesis of new materials essential to the enhancement of the quality of life, and the surge in and sustenance of economic and technological progress have benefited immensely from chemistry. A degree programme in chemistry should foster in the undergraduate an appreciation of the centrality of chemical science to human well-being, as well as its inevitable linkage to, and interactions with, other branches of science.
